Planet Under Pressure Conference

planetpressure3The Planet Under Pressure conference (26-29 March 2012, London) will provide a comprehensive update of the pressure planet Earth is now under. The conference will discuss solutions at all scales to move societies on to a sustainable pathway. It will provide scientific leadership towards the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio+20.

The Scientific Organising Committee invites proposals for parallel sessions by 18 March 2011. To submit a proposal for a session and for more information, visit the conference website.

QR_cover_Jan2010A special issue edited by Xiaoping Yang and Louis A. Scuderi titled “Environmental changes in arid and semi-arid regions” has just been published in Quaternary Research (73(1): 1-162). This compilation of articles arose from the International Workshop on Late Quaternary Environmental Changes in Arid Land, held 10-17 September 2007 in Alashan, Inner Mongolia, China.

Another special issue on this theme titled “Land degradation and rehabilitation in ecologically fragile area” and guest edited by Xiaoping Yang and Arthur Conacher was published in 2009 in Geophysical Research (47(1): 1-94).

A New PAGES Website!

Dear PAGES members,

PAGES has launched a new version of the website in keeping with the latest trends in website design. During this transition period some web pages and metadatabases may be temporarily unavailable or outdated. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

The new website layout is relatively unchanged with the exception of the My PAGES section, that is designed to serve as a “one-stop shop” to access PAGES offerings and get involved in PAGES activities.

PAGES Grants Support of Workshops

PAGES accepts proposals for focused scientific meetings that contribute directly to the goals defined in the PAGES Science Plan. Limited support (a few thousand USD) can be requested for three categories of meetings: workshops of PAGES Working Groups, educational meetings and other workshops for which proposals are submitted to the biannual Open Call. Deadlines in 2010 are 15 May and 22 November. For more information see here.

IHOPE Science Plan

Integrated History and Future ofPeople on Earth (IHOPE) is a joint research initiative of PAGES and the AIMES (Analysis, Integration and Modelling of the Earth System) project with the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP). IHOPE seeks to better understand the dynamic interactions between all aspects of human behavior and the environment by connecting the histories of humans, climate and environment at multiple temporalscales (millennial, centennial, decadal and future scenarios).

The science plan has just been developed and is now available for download.
