The PAGES 2k Network conducted an online seminar series 20 May - 8 Nov 2021.

Seminar - 7 September at 13:00 UTC

Johann Jungclaus from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg and Evelien van Dijk from the University of Oslo will present new simulations covering the Common Era: "Transient simulations over the Common Era in PMIP4/CMIP6 and a look into the coolest period of the first millennium".

> Watch the YouTube recording

Description

In the first part, Johann will give an overview on CMIP6/PMIP4 simulations. Novel estimates and updates of external forcing have been compiled (Jungclaus et al. 2017). In addition to the Tier-1 category simulation "past1000" for the period 850 CE to 1849 CE, the optional "past2k" experiment covers the entire CE. Several groups have included innovative features, such as interactive volcanic aerosols and the direct simulation of water isotopes. After serious delays, the ESGF is now being filled by modeling groups running these transient simulations.

Based on new simulations covering the last 2000 years, Evelien will give insight into the volcanic induced cooling over the Northern Hemisphere in the mid 6th–7th century. The climate in the Northern Hemisphere of the mid-6th century was one of the coldest during the last two millennia. The onset of this cold period is attributed to the volcanic double eruption event in 536 and 540 CE based on multiple paleo-proxies. Recently, there has been a debate about how long lasting and cold this volcanic induced cold period actually was. This part of the talk will present results from additional ensemble simulations set up from the MPI-ESM "past2k" covering 520-680 CE to shed more light into the volcanic forcing response and possible mechanisms involved.
