A three-day workshop on "Uncertainties in data analysis" will be held at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Germany, from 30 September to 2 October 2020.

Logistics

In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be a combination of both physical and virtual presentations/participation. Organizers will be able to cover your traveling and accommodation costs up to a certain amount (depending on the number of participants coming to Potsdam and when using the B&B Hotel Potsdam). The costs for travel and accommodation have to be paid first by the participant but will be reimbursed during the workshop (details will follow).

Description

The workshop will consist of several lectures and hands-on tutorials conducted by experts from different applied fields that deal with uncertainties:

- Modelling uncertainties in age-depth modeling and palaeo-ecological time series
- Detecting transitions in observations and simulations via Bayesian Inference
- When statistics and proxy uncertainties clash
- Model errors in coupled differential equations

The sessions are intended primarily for postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The workshop would also provide a space where researchers could get together and decide on potential future collaborations that tackle unresolved challenges related to uncertainties in data.

- Nadine Berner (Safety Analysis Division, GRS gGmbH, Research Center, Garching near Munich): "Localization of transitions in observations and simulations via Bayesian Inference"
- Sune Rasmussen (Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen): "When statistics and proxy uncertainties clash: Combining uncertainties from ice cores and other climate records without harming the math (too much)"
- Rebecca Morrison (Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, Colorado, USA): "Learning sparse representations of model error in coupled differential equations"

Abstract submissions

Abstracts are due by 5 August.

Scientific contributions are welcomed and all attendees are encouraged to present at IUCliD (oral presentation only), but it is not required. Abstract submission itself will be done within the registration process.

Your abstract should meet the following requirements: in English language, 250 words maximum, abstracts may not include tables and graphs.

You will be informed about the program by 15 August 2020 by email from the organizing team.
