Projects developed and/or in progress since inception of Ocean2k in late 2011 include:
HR-LR synthesis (2014 -)
Analysis of the spatial and temporal pattern of emergence of the anthropogenic global warming (AGW) signature in the global oceans from marine paleoclimate data and comparison to that simulated in the PMIP3/CMIP5 archive. A manuscript is in preparation.
Phase 2 projects (2015 -)
Three community-wide themes and several sub-themes emerged from the workshop and are the foci for Ocean2k Phase 2. The community-wide themes are 1) metadatabase modernization, 2) quantifying and reducing marine record age model uncertainties, and 3) understanding patterns of global ocean δ18O. Sub-themes are exploring past 2k changes in ENSO teleconnections; spatio-temporal AMOC dynamics; North Atlantic influences on the Mediterranean climate; and the oceanic response to volcanic forcing in proxy and model reconstructions.
Phase 2 planning and workshops (2015)
Phase 2 planning began in early 2015 with a renewed call for participation, review of the metadatabases, renewed synthesis and analysis activities, and culminated in the 1st Ocean2k Workshop, Barcelona, Spain, focused on and organized around phase 2 objectives.
First-pass low-resolution (LR) synthesis (2012-2015)
Synthesis of marine sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions at nominally bicentennial resolution and comparison of results with a multimodel ensemble of SST simulations from the PMIP3/CMIP5 archive. See McGregor et al. 2015 Nature Geoscience.
First-pass high-resolution (HR) synthesis (2012-2015)
Reconstruction of regional SST at annual resolution from annual and higher resolution marine paleoclimate observations. See Tierney et al. 2015 Paleoceanography.
