Postdoctoral Researcher, ice cores, Ohio, USA

The Ice Core Paleoclimatology Research Group, Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, seeks a one-year Postdoctoral Researcher in the analysis of ice cores.

Funding is available for a postdoctoral researcher with laboratory based expertise in chemistry and physics of the atmosphere/glaciers as part of the NSF-funded project entitled "Analyzing Atmospheric Warming and Environmental Changes from High-Altitude Ice Cores", a program for assessing the interaction between human and environmental factors to impact the chemical and physical characteristics of the glacier of Mt. Ortles (eastern Italian Alps), from the pre-industrial era to the present time (PI Paolo Gabrielli, co-PI Lonnie Thompson).

Activities will include, but not be limited to, analysis of innovative proxies in ice cores samples and re-evaluation and interpretation of the data obtained. While a Mass Spectrometer (Element2, ICP-SFMS) and/or a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) will be available for possible ultra trace element and black carbon analyses, novel expertise and collaborations with other institutes in innovative ice core analysis will be particularly considered.

The researcher will be expected to present results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The initial appointment will be for one year, with possible continuation dependent on funding availability and performance. Necessary funds for conference travel will also be provided.

PhD in relevant field (including environmental, physical, chemical and geological sciences) with research experience in one or more of the following: glaciology, paleoclimatology, aerosol studies, geochemistry. Particular consideration will be given to candidates with extensive laboratory experience in preparation of environmental samples in clean room conditions and/or in innovative ice core analysis.
