The Department of Earth Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands, invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher in Paleoclimate modelling for a joint project with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VUA.


The appointment will be for a total of three years. The starting date is as soon as possible. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum €2,588.00 gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of €4,084.00 gross per month (salary scale 10) based on full-time employment.


This project is focused on understanding the impact of rapid warming on global ice sheet melt and the consequence for sea-level rise. A coupled earth system model including a dynamic ice-sheet module will be applied to quantify the effect of different deglaciation scenarios. Candidates are sought with a marked interest in past climates, in particular in understanding the mechanism behind deglaciations. The department is looking for candidates with proven expertise in climate modelling; Fortran coding skills will be strongly valued. The appointed researcher is expected to actively collaborate with a postdoctoral researcher at IVM and further imbed its activities into the breadth of topics already active in the model user's community.

The candidate will be expected to:

- set up, run and analyze climate model simulations focusing on glacial terminations
- publish the results of these simulations in international leading journals and present them at international meetings
- interact with and complement existing research activities in- and outside the department
- contribute to the general educational programs of the department, at both the undergraduate and graduate level; this includes the supervision of bachelor and master theses, and internships
- show academic leadership nationally and internationally
- participate in everyday departmental activities and tasks, including writing grant proposals.


The successful candidate must have a PhD in paleoclimate modelling, or a PhD in a related area. The candidate should have a proven track record of original research contributions in paleoclimate modelling; have an international network of collaborators; have good communication skills; be fluent in English.
