A Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Tropical Paleoclimatology based on Speleothem Records from South America is available at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.

Logistics

The PD fellowship is BRL 7,373 monthly or about USD 22,400 per year (net wage, tax free). A research contingency fund of 15% of annual salary will be provided for research activities.

The start date is expected to be first semester of 2020, with the possibility of an advanced date for qualified candidates.

Description

The university is offering an opportunity for a 24-month post-doctoral fellowship at the Geosciences Institute of University of Sao Paulo.

This position requires previous experience in paleoclimate studies based on geochemistry of speleothems.

The project aims to reconstruct the South American Summer Monsoon during the last 2000 years by using stable isotope and trace-element geochemistry data in speleothems precisely dated by U/Th method.

Tasks

The researcher will have access to laboratory facilities at University of São Paulo to perform the stable isotope analyses, with the possibility for further U-series dating laboratory work with a collaborating institution in USA or China.

Requirements

This position is part of a research project jointly funded by FAPESP/Brazil and NSF/USA that aims to reconstruct the climate in South America by using tree rings and speleothem records (https://www.pirecreate.com/).

The candidate must have obtained the PhD degree in the last three years and be fluent in English.
