PhD position, paleoecology/ecosystem change - Bergen, Norway

A PhD position is available at the Department of Biological Sciences and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in Bergen, Norway, within paleoecology/ecosystem change/carbon modeling.

Logistics

The position is for a fixed-term period of three years with the possibility of a fourth year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). It is subject to broad topics within the impacts of past climate change, human land-use history, and natural succession on ecosystem composition, biodiversity, and soil carbon storage.

Description

The main focus of the project is to use the organic soils found in peat and lakes as long-term 'archives' providing unique information about how past natural succession and deforestation by humans has influenced both biodiversity and the C stocks in soil.

Paleoecological records will allow us to understand species and ecosystem responses from land-use change and dynamics to different rates and degrees of change that have occurred analogous to projected climate change to determine rates and possible directions for the future.

Tasks

- Fieldwork (sediment/peat and soil sampling) and lab-work (pollen and plant macrofossil analysis)
- Sediment analysis (XRF, LOI)
- 14C dates and age modeling
- Data analysis and presentation of results
- Reconstruction of past vegetation and environment
- Modeling of past vegetation and landscapes, including carbon dynamics
- The final PhD project will be decided based on the candidate’s background and research interests with the consent of the supervisors.

Requirements

- The applicant must hold a Masters degree or the equivalent in ecology, paleoecology, paleoclimatology or related fields or must have submitted his/her Masters thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the Masters degree has been awarded.
- Experience from paleoecological field and lab work and/or studies in vegetation and climate history, collection and analysis of paleoecological data is an advantage.
- The candidate will be encouraged to explore his/her own ideas and research questions related to the overall goals of the PhD project. Therefore, proactive problem solving skills will be highly valued.
- Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others in the project and the research group.
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English
