Expertise & Interests
Overview / specialty | Dr. Atreyee Bhattacharya is paleoclimatologist at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) and Center of Asian Studies (CAS) at the University of Colorado, Boulder as well as a visiting researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) University of California, San Diego. At the University of Colorado Boulder, which she joined in 2015, Atreyee has taught in the Environmental Studies Program as well as the International Affairs Program, started and directed the Global Environmental Affairs Program between 2015-2019 and continues to lead the Course Based Undergraduate Research Education (CURE) initiative (this aims at bringing research education into undergraduate classrooms). Atreyee’s research focuses on climatological and environmental reconstructions using proxy data in natural archives, studying impact of environmental disasters on human societies using archival documents and developing statistical methods to convert paleo data to information usable by societal stakeholders (engaged scholarship).
Atreyee completed her B.Sc in geology from Presidency college, Calcutta (2003), masters in applied geosciences from I.I.T. Kharagpur (2005), Ph.D in earth and planetary sciences from Harvard University (2012) and postdoctoral training from the University of California, Los Angeles (2015). She has held research and teaching positions at North Carolina State University and Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS, Bangalore) as well as science communication and writing related positions at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Atreyee has published over a 100 popular science and outreach works (including animation videos) for a wide array of publications (print and web-based) on issues related to climate and environment, edited a number of climate books targeted for school children, have led numerous sessions and symposiums focusing on synergy of natural sciences and social sciences and remains passionate about science education, awareness and outreach. |
