A contribution to PAGES' Global Paleofire Working Group which manages the Global Charcoal Database (GCD). This open access article presents a “paleofire”, a new open source R package intended to ease the process of interrogating and analyzing sedimentary charcoal series (transformation, homogenization, synthesis, mapping, etc.) in the GCD.
