Minerogenic matter transported into a lake during spring snowmelt-floods form the base of a varve, i.e. the beginning of a new depositional cycle. Organic matter, mainly from lacustrine production, is accumulated during the following summer, autumn and winter, completing the annual rhythm of sedimentation.
