PAGES' Global Soil and Sediment Transfers in the Anthropocene (GloSS) working group will hold a database meeting from 18-20 October 2018 in Koblenz, Germany.

Logistics
This meeting will be open, with 35-40 expected participants. It is the third and final meeting of the group (originally scheduled for March 2018 in India).
The meeting starts Thursday 18 October, and finishes Saturday 20 October. Arrival in Koblenz on 17 October is recommended.
Koblenz is around 100 km away from the Frankfurt airport and around 90 km from the Köln/Bonn airport. Koblenz is well connected by train with the Frankfurt airport (1.5 hrs by train).
Description
This workshop is the third meeting of the GloSS working group. In the last meeting at Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, and with inputs from participants afterwards, the group has finalized the database format and a wiki has also been set up. Participants from all countries are already entering the data in the desired format and most of the technical issues related to data input and formatting have been resolved in the last few months. The Koblenz meeting will be a good opportunity to present synthesis of the data from a few regions so that the final outputs as per the objectives of the GLOSS project can be delivered.
Tentative schedule
The Koblenz meeting will be a good opportunity to present synthesis of the data from a few regions so that we can deliver the final outputs following the objectives of the GloSS project. A tentative schedule of the workshop is as follows:
- Presentation, discussion and, if necessary, minor modifications of the newly developed GloSS database structure
- Progress reports of the regional task force leaders regarding database and synthesis of data on erosion
- Interactive discussions to work towards the regional syntheses or regional/global products. This discussion will focus on two types of products – the case-study based on the main assets discussion of studying GLOSS; and the aim to present the database and highlight strengths and weaknesses (for example under-studied regions)
- Focused discussions on designing innovative analytical methods to understand the causal factors of soil erosion and land degradation in different parts of the world including the human-landscape interactions
- Trip along the Rhine in Koblenz

- Talk on data steward ship and management of paleo-environmental databases within PAGES
- Presentation on the current status of the data base structure
- Presentations by regional task force leaders on database and data synthesis
- Poster session with Coffee break

Day 2: 19 October, start at 9:00
- Keynote talk(s): Innovative analytical methods of data analysis and applications
- Regional synthesis of the database
- Interactive discussions / breakout working groups
- Poster Session during the Coffee break
Day 3: 20 October, start at 9.30
- Field trip along the Rhine and Moselle rivers in Koblenz
- Final discussion and closing WS
Wiki database
As a result of the second workshop, a wiki database has been developed and established that compiles information on soil and sediment transfers in the Holocene. This database is hosted by CSDMS, and accessible through: https://pagesgloss.colorado.edu/wiki/
After a development and test phase, the database is now being populated by the regional taskforce leaders.

Hotel rooms have been reserved at the Hotel Kleiner Riesen in the vicinity of the Federal Institute at a special rate of 70 € and 95 € per night in a single and double room, respectively. Other recommended hotels close to the Federal Institute are: Hotel Brenner, GHotel Koblenz and Hotel Ibis.
