3rd International Congress on Stratigraphy

Location
Milan, Italy
Dates
-
Meeting Category

The 3rd International Congress on Stratigraphy will be held from 2-5 July 2019 in Milan, Italy.

Venue

Università degli Studi di Milano
Via Festa del Perdono 7
located in the old "Ca' Granda" (literally "the Big House")

Description

The topics of the congress will range from the Precambrian to the Holocene and will include all the stratigraphic techniques. The congress will provide the opportunity to discuss the recent developments in the study of the stratigraphy of the volcanic areas, Antarctic and Arctic sedimentary successions and ice caps, as well as of crystalline rocks. We also invite specialists from georesources exploration and hydrogeology to present their most advanced contributions to subsurface stratigraphy.

Themes

The scientific program is intended to give space to researches through all stratigraphic fields, methodologies and applications. In order to achieve this scope, the following themes have been identified:

T1. History of Stratigraphy
T2. Stratigraphic tools
T3. Erathemes, Systems, Series and Stages
T4. Stratigraphy of carbonates and carbonate platforms
T5. Stratigraphy of volcanoes and of volcanic areas
T6. Antarctic and Arctic
T7. Stratigraphy and geological mapping
T8. Subsurface stratigraphy
T9. Geochronology and time scales
T10. Stratigraphy in crystalline rocks
T11. Open Theme

Ice-core session

Topic – T6: Antarctic and Artic: Ice core stratigraphy: regional to global paleoclimatic reconstruction

Polar and high mountain glaciers provide information about past climate and environmental conditions on timescales from decades to hundreds of millennia, as well as direct records of the composition of the atmosphere. Ice cores contain highly detailed continuous stratigraphic records extending from the present to 800 ka BP. A large variety of climate proxies, related to atmospheric and climate changes can be analysed and dated with an accuracy ranging from a few years, for recent centuries, to a few millennia for older records. Over the past two decades, the contribution of ice core studies to the reconstruction and interpretation of past climate changes became fundamental: they allowed the direct measurement of greenhouse gas changes in the past and the detection of rapid climatic changes.
