PAGES' Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis (SISAL) working group will hold their second workshop, titled "Speleothem isotope records for climate model evaluation", in Stockholm, Sweden, from 20-22 September 2017.
Venue
Navarino Environmental Observatory
Department of Geological Sciences
University of Stockholm
Sweden
Logistics
This is an open workshop but limited to 25-30 participants. It will draw on the SISAL WG membership, modelers from the PMIP community and representatives of the Iso2k sub-group of the PAGES2k Network. Between 5-10 places will be reserved for other scientists to attend.
Organizers would like to thank Past Global Changes (PAGES), Navarino Observatory, Stockholm University, Savillex, John Cantle, UCD Dublin and the University of Reading for their financial support.
Description
The SISAL WG is a community-effort to compile the many hundreds of speleothem isotopic records worldwide, with careful screening, construction of standardised age models, and documentation of measurement and age-model uncertainties. SISAL will produce a public-access database and publications to document this, and make use of the database to analyse past changes in climate and atmospheric circulation.
A major motivation for creating the database is to provide a tool to evaluate state-of-the-art climate models that explicitly simulate water and carbon isotopes and/or atmospheric tracers. Several modeling groups running paleoclimate simulations during the current phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6/PMIP4) are using isotope- and tracer- enabled models. We will discuss the use of speleothem data for model evaluation at the SISAL WG kick-off meeting in June.
We have made substantial progress on the SISAL database and data collection since last December and we confidently expect to produce a first version of the database (ca 150 records) by Northern Hemisphere autumn 2017, making it timely to hold a second workshop aligned with the PMIP meeting (September 2017) to design data-model comparisons that SISAL will carry out before the 2018 workshop.
Workshop goals
The goals of the workshop are:
- to design evaluations of existing isotope-enabled simulations using the first version of the SISAL database to be carried out as proof-of-concept exercises during 2017/2018;
- to discuss how the SISAL data should be made available to climate-modeller end-users;
- to determine priorities for data collection (time periods, regions) in 2018 to maximise the usefulness of SISAL data for CMIP6/PMIP4;
- to discuss climatic interpretation of isotope data, in order to co-design data analyses that will address this issue.
Financial support
Some financial support will be available for early-career researchers and participants from developing countries. State your case for support when applying.
