Workshop aims

To hold a two-day, product-oriented working meeting for participants to work towards the goal of identifying and documenting summer temperature and drought co-variability across Europe over the past millennium.

This will be accomplished by assessing and comparing:
1. 20th century instrumental temperature and precipitation/drought data
2. gridded tree-ring based temperature and drought reconstructions from 850 CE to the present, and
3. climate model simulations of temperature and precipitation/drought from 850 CE to the present.

The aimed-for article can be considered as the extension of three recent studies:

Objectives

- Assess the co-variability, in space and time, of summer temperature and summer drought across Europe since c. 850 CE at inter-annual to sub-centennial time-scales.
- Investigate potential changes in dominating patterns of co-variability vis-à-vis the time-scales chosen.
- Empirically test the hypothesis, suggested by climate model simulations, that northern Europe tends to be wetter in a warmer climate and southern Europe tends to be drier.
- Assess the accuracy and precision of climate models to simulate the summer temperature and summer drought co-variability as found both in 20th century instrumental data and millennium-long tree-ring based reconstructions.
- Investigate and discuss results from cross-spectral analyses of temperature and drought variability in time and space over Europe.
