The PAGES-endorsed International Paleofire Network (IPN) and PAGES' Integrating diverse knowledge systems for environmental policy working group (DiverseK) will conduct a two-day online workshop "Paleofire research: methods, development and opportunities" from 26-27 May 2021.

Description

This Zoom event is designed for early-career researchers (ECRs).

Organizers invite all ECRs interested in the use of paleofire proxies as a tool in their research to attend the workshop. They hope this will be a good platform to foster collaborations between ECRs across the globe and to discuss various aspects of paleofire research.

The event is supported by PAGES and the PAGES Early-Career Network (ECN).

Program

Day 1 – 26 May 2021 – Introduction to Paleofire (14:00-15:35 UTC)

14:00-14:15 Welcome: IPN, PAGES, DiverseK, PAGES ECR

14:15-14:35 Richard Vachula (College of William and Mary, USA): Introduction to charcoal methods and advances

14:35-14:50 Sambor Czerwiński (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland): The potential and limitations of using historical data for palaeofire reconstructions

14:50-15:05 TBA

15:20-15:35 Andriantsilavo Razafimanantsoa (University of Cape Town, South Africa): Palaeoecological evidence of fire and its role on vegetation dynamics in Central Highlands Madagascar during the Holocene

Day 2 - 27 May 2021 – Paleofire continued (14:00-16:00 UTC)

14:00-14:05 Welcome: IPN

14:05-14:20 Michela Mariani (University of Nottingham, UK): Disruption of Indigenous burning promotes unprecedented wildfires in southeastern Australian forests and woodlands

14:20-14:35 Raquel Franco Cassino (Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Brazil): Paleofire records in the Brazilian savanna: long-term fire variability in a fire-dependent ecosystem

14:35-14:50 Andy Hennebelle (Université de Montréal, Canada): TBA

14:50-15:05 Charuta Kulkarni (European Union Marie Curie Fellow (2018-2020), currently independent researcher): Anthropogenic fires in agroforestry landscapes of India: Lessons from the "burnt" past for future management of tropical social-ecological systems

How to join

The meeting will be held on Zoom. Organizers will post an open link to the Zoom meeting before the workshop, however, if you already know you will join the workshop, please register via this Google form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Nr5Bgfhh9FJEjBjceEj2M4-47oyDTmyBKBC1GlCt7nA/viewform?ts=6078166f&edit_requested=true
