Description
The Paleoclimatology working group of the Institute of Geological Sciences at the Freie Universität Berlin is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student to conduct research on the reconstruction of paleoenvironmental change during the Eocene epoch in Central Europe. The Eocene is considered an analog for climate change as it will potentially materialize within the coming decades. Specifically, the student will work on sediment samples and fossil plant specimens (i.e., leaves) from the UNESCO world heritage site Messel Pit in Germany to reconstruct CO2 variability based on stomata density, carbon isotope composition, and plant morphology, and biodiversity changes in response to CO2 variability. This project will be conducted within a dynamic and interdisciplinary collaboration framework, including the Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Frankfurt, Senckenberg Research Station Messel Pit, and the University of Tübingen.
Tasks

Requirements
- Master's degree in geology or a related field
- Background in paleobotany is desirable but not mandatory
- Interest in geochemistry
- Experience in laboratory work and data analysis
- Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal
- Knowledge of German is advantageous
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
