Research Assistant
Position for a limited period of 3 years. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft.
Description
-Scientific services in research
-Micropaleontological analyses of the sediments from Nam Co Lake (preparation,
documentation, morphometric analyses)
-Evaluation of the collected data, together with colleagues from Germany and abroad and
their data
-Publication of the results in international, peer-reviewed journals
-Participation in sampling campaigns in Beijing (China)
-Presentation of the results at national and international conferences
Tasks
Within the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), several hundred metres of sediment were recently drilled from Nam Co Lake in Tibet, which will be examined and analysed within several international scientific projects in the coming years, together with colleagues from China, Switzerland and the UK. The focus of the Greifswald groups will be on micropalaeontological and palaeomagnetic investigations. The University of Greifswald's Paleontology working group is looking for a research assistant who is interested in doing a doctorate in issues related to micropaleontology. Working together with a member of staff from the field of physical geography at the University of Greifswald and colleagues from Manchester and Newcastle, a focus of the work will be placed on the reconstruction of environmental changes and their effects on the lake's organisms. The focus here is on morphometric studies (size, shape) of ostracode shells. The aim is to reconstruct the palaeoecological conditions related to climatic changes. Furthermore, together with the member of staff from physical geography and colleagues from the University of Bern, the candidate will also investigate whether periods with a weak magnetic field affected biodiversity in this ecosystem located at an altitude of 4700 m.
Requirements
-Advanced university degree (Diplom, master's degree or equivalent) in geology, paleobiology, geography or a related discipline at the time of recruitment
-Good English language skills

Preferable knowledge include:
-Basic knowledge in micropaleontology
-Basic knowledge of relevant computer programmes (e.g. Matlab, R)
