2. IPCC SROCC Information Event for ECRs - 18 December
Mountain Research Initiative, PAGES and the Swiss Polar Institute will conduct a half-day information and networking event specifically dedicated to ECRs based in Switzerland and whose scientific background, research or expertise relates to climate change on 18 December 2018 in Bern, Switzerland.
This is a chance to join the discussion, network, and learn from prominent climate scientists and experts participating in the IPCC assessment process. This event will provide background information on the assessment process, and perspectives from the scientific communities working on mountains, polar regions, and past climates on the challenges and prospects for research on climate change in these environments.
Speakers will be Valérie Masson-Delmotte, IPCC Working Group I Co-Chair; Gian-Kasper Plattner, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research (WSL); Christian Huggel, University of Zurich; Ulrike Lohmann, ETH Zurich; and Darrell Kaufman, Northern Arizona University.

3. Working Group news
i. C-SIDE: An outreach event, presented by Xavier Crosta, will be held on 25 October in conjunction with the group's first workshop "Developing Data and Modeling Capacity to Understand Past Changes in Sea Ice in the Southern Ocean" from 24-26 October 2018, Vancouver, Canada. ii. CVAS: The third workshop will now be held 24-25 January 2019 in Seattle, USA. See point 6 for all details.
iii. DAPS: DAPS performs an intercomparison experiment for data assimilation methods for paleoclimatic applications. All groups using such methods are encouraged to participate. First analyses of the results will start in January 2019, and data should be uploaded before then, if possible. Later submissions are also welcome. For the intercomparison, Northern Hemisphere (NH) local temperature pseudo-reconstructions for the period 1900–2000 will be assimilated. The data assimilation simulations will be compared using a common validation setup. The restriction to the NH and the period after 1900 CE ensures that the surface climate is known relatively well, which is crucial both for providing pseudo-reconstructions with a realistic climate signal and for validation. iv. LandCover6k: a. Register by 31 October for the "European Land-use at 6000BP: transforming on-site data to land-use units distributed in space" workshop from 28-30 January 2019 in Hemmenhofen, Germany. See point 6 for all details.
b. Co-design workshop: The PAGES LandCover6k co-design workshop in Sitges, Spain, 24-28 September 2018 was very successful. Representatives from LandCover6k, PEOPLE 3000, PMIP, and the carbon-cycle modeling community co-designed palaeoclimate experiments to study the effect of past anthropogenic land-use and land-cover change on climate and the carbon cycle. c. Land Use Database: Our geodatabase for classifying global land activities across the past 6000 years is currently being tested and almost ready for data. Using ArcGIS we have created a grid of 8x8 km squares covering the entire global land surface – some 2.5 million cells! – to be classified according to the criteria set out in the LandCover6k special issue of PAGES Magazine (Morrison et al. 2018). Accompanying documentation for the database will also be circulated soon – this will include detailed definitions of our land-use categories and associated variables, as well as a step-by-step guide to using the database. We are currently focussed on readying maps for our pre-1850 time-slices and warmly welcome new contributors – please contact oboles@sas.upenn.edu and we can put you in contact with the coordinators of our regional working groups.

ii. Call for papers - IPCC AR6 Chapter 9: AR6 Chapter 9 (Ocean, Cryosphere and Sea Level Change) Lead Authors encourage submission of papers on topics relevant to ocean, cryosphere and sea-level change via email to Tamzin Palmer: ar6chapter9papers@ipcc-wg1.fr, using the subject line "IPCC AR6 WGI Chapter 9: Relevant paper". All papers will be treated as confidential. Deadlines for citation in AR6 WG1 are submission by 31 December 2019 and acceptance by 30 September 2020.

11. Call for contributions - Quaternary in Africa special issue
Contribute to the Special Issue "Applying the Quaternary in Africa: The Role of the Past in Supporting the Future". Papers welcome from a wide range of disciplines on how a Quaternary perspective on ecosystem and environmental change can be used to assess the challenges to future management of natural capital and natural resources. 13. Future Earth updates
i. European Space Agency-Future Earth funding call for joint activities: Deadline 2 November. These funds are available to the Future Earth community to test out ideas that make use of the European Space Agency’s Earth observation data. Ideally these ideas would be seen as a springboard to larger projects that could be developed with ESA. ii. Future Earth and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) are gathering input for the Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD) consultation on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework: As the Aichi targets come to an end in 2020, we are left with the CBD’s 2050 Vision: "by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people" ("Living in Harmony with Nature", CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020). Looking back at and learning from the last decade brings important questions for the biodiversity scientific community as to how this vision can be achieved and through which knowledge and tools. Future Earth and the CBD recently joined forces in that regard. Survey deadline 5 November: The survey consists of five questions aiming at (i) proposing a set of priorities emanating from the scientific community and (ii) critically analysing current targets and indicators. Two webinars will be organised by Future Earth and CNRS (time and date TBD) to present and discuss the results of this consultation, before and after the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 14). Following the reception of your written contributions and the two webinars, responses and webinar discussion points will be collected and submitted as a service to the CBD Secretariat by 15 December.
COP14 Preparation: Concerning COP14, Future Earth would like to gather all information needed to effectively coordinate between the various events in which the Future Earth community may be involved to help maximise their impact, including communications efforts.
