Heli Huhtamaa and Samuli Helama connect cooling caused by volcanism to severe crop failures, impoverishment and hunger in 17th century Finland, in Journal of Historical Geography in June. This work, titled "Distant impact: tropical volcanic eruptions and climate-driven agricultural crises in seventeenth-century Ostrobothnia, Finland" was also previewed at the VICS 2016 meeting.

Plus Michael Sigl and Matt Toohey have an article in discussion phase in Earth System Science Data, describing a new reconstruction of volcanic stratospheric sulfur injections and the associated aerosol optical depth from 500 BCE to 1900 CE. Discussion is open until 14 August.
