The Palaeoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP), now in its third phase, co-ordinates a community of researchers who compare structurally different climate models in a palaeoenvironmental context. The project is endorsed by both WCRP/CLIVAR/WGCM and IGBP PAGES.

Uncertainties highlighted in climate prediction involve aspects of the climate that have changed in response to different perturbations and on a wide range of time scales. PMIP'€™s mission is to assess whether these changes are consistent with current theories of the climate system. The timing of the next general meeting of PMIP3 is deliberate. We wish to complete, galvanise and synthesize PMIP3 products in time for inclusion within the IPCC AR5. The IPCC deadline for papers to be submitted is the end of July 2012.

This meeting is important as it will:

- Encourage groups to advance their simulations, analyses and papers prior to the meeting itself

- Gather together all of the key players who are working on PMIP3 science and its inclusion in IPCC to accelerate progress

- Bring all of the relevant IPCC co-ordinating, lead and contributing authors together with the PMIP community so that the IPCC can be made aware of the latest state of the science and what is and will become available for inclusion in the palaeoclimate and other chapters of the 5th Assessment Report

A strong focus for the meeting will be the time intervals included as part of CMIP5 (LGM, mid-Holocene and the Last Millennium) but also other time intervals which are likely to be included within the IPCC will be covered (e.g. Last Interglacial, Pliocene, Eocene).
