This workshop is part of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP) endorsed by PAGES.

The Last Millennium, the mid-Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum are the three main foci for multi-model ensemble palaeoclimate simulations as part of the CMIP5/PMIP3 project. These palaeo-simulations will be run with the same model version that each modelling group is using for future climate projections in CMIP5, and this will allow us to test how the variability is affected by changes in the climate background state. This requires developing specific model criteria and methodologies to compare model and data.

The workshop will consider tropical climate interannual to multidecadal variability for the LM, the Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum with the aims of:

1. Synthesising available high-resolution data sets for these time periods

2 Deciding how to include the information from different sensors (coral, shells, tree rings, etc.) in a common framework in a way that best reflects what each type of record shows about tropical variability

3. Defining joint analyses of model experiments and observations to characterise topical variability

4. Determining future directions for model/data comparisons.
