EAQUA was established on 7 June 2007 in Kampala, Uganda with the mission of enhancing the growth of Quaternary Science community in the eastern and central African region through training, promotion of collaborative research and information exchange on Quaternary Science issues.

The primary objective of the 2nd Workshop is to unite and enhance active communication on Quaternary research issues on paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, archeology, paleontology and paleoanthropology. The workshop is expected to bring together East African Quaternary scientists and students for exchanging information and to assess the opportunities and challenges in research, training and capacity building. The workshop is also expected to be a forum for strengthening and networking the East African Quaternary community.

The workshop program includes invited review presentations, contributed papers in thematic sessions, and poster sessions. The major themes of the workshop include: 1. Extreme Rain Fall Variability and Human-Environment Interactions in East Africa: The Last 2000 Years 2. Evidences of Long Term Monsoon Variability and Abrupt Changes in East Africa 3. Paleobotany: Developing Techniques for Habitat and Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction of Prehistoric Sites 4. The fossil and Archeological Record in East Africa 5. Geo-sites: Geoparks Development and Conservation 6. Climate and Global Change: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability Assessment for East Africa
