The workshop will establish the West African Quaternary Research Association (WAQUA) and aims to build academic partnerships and enhance Quaternary research capacity in the West African region.

The workshop will draw together, for the first time, scientists working on paleoclimatic changes, paleoshoreline shifting and human responses at timescale of the past 2 million years to share and exchange scientific knowledge.

The main objectives include:

- Improving understanding of the driving forces of paleoclimatic and sea level changes and applying the lessons for future climatic dynamics.

- Proper understanding of the Tertiary/Pleistocene boundary in the West African sub-region.

- Providing opportunities for interactions between young paleoscientists and senior colleagues, with the view of opening up exchange programs among researchers from various countries within the sub-region.
