The workshops goals are to (1) assess the current state of the art in peatland paleoclimatology, with emphasis on late Holocene records with multidecadal resolution and sensitivity, (2) identify critical research needs and priorities, and (3) develop a comprehensive science agenda for peatland paleoclimatology, including improvement of chronologies, refinement of proxies, and coordinated plans for development of a synoptic network using consistent methodologies.

The workshop will focus on six key thematic areas: (1) proxy development and refinement, (2) improvement of chronologies, (3) peatland responses to climate change, (4) peatland paleoclimate networks, (5) utilizing peatland paleoclimatology in understanding carbon dynamics, and (6) integrating peatland records with other paleoclimate records, with paleoclimate models, and with ongoing (real-time) studies of peatland hydrology, dynamics, biogeochemistry, and climatology.
