Recent natural disasters and extreme weather events – the tragedy of the China earthquakes, chaos of unprecedented snow falls in the UK, the catastrophe of cyclones in Burma and the USA, the enormous loss of life after the Asian Tsunami, and the heartbreak of the current bush fires in Australia – serve as a timely reminder of how much we still need to learn about our changing planet.

The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly 2011 will address some of these issues, and it is arguably the most important international multi-disciplinary conference to be able to do so because of the breadth and depth of the expertise of its eight participating scientific associations.
