IMBER (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research; http://www.imber.info/ will hold its fourth ClimEco (Climate and Ecology) summer school - ClimEco4 – at the East China Normal University in Shanghai, China from 4-9 August 2014.
This summer school, co-sponsored by PAGES, is aimed at early career researchers (less than 10 years after Ph.D.) and students, from natural and social science communities, who are interested in research that is needed to address the complex issues facing marine ecosystems and the human societies that depend on them.
ClimEco4 will provide training in sourcing, analysing and transforming data (both from the past and present) into usable products, tools or advice. It will focus on indices (or proxies) for evaluating marine ecosystems - what they are, how to construct them (for process/observation scientists), how to use them (modellers from natural and social sciences) - and combining them to inform policy and decision-making.
Lectures will discuss indices of recent and past climate change, climate impacts and marine ecosystem services, and their links to socio-economic indices and policy information in relation to climate-ecosystem interaction. They will include a climate change primer, general information on databases (acquiring and managing large data sets), data analysis methods for indicators (statistical methods), using indicators with models (ecosystem, socio-economic models), and criteria and use of indicators for informing marine management and policy. There will be group projects and daily "hands-on" sessions with example (or your own!) databases, indices, and models to “try out” the concepts covered in the lectures.
The lecturers are from a range of disciplines in both the natural and social sciences. They will share their different marine science perspecitives in lectures, and facilitate the group projects and practical sessions.
