Initiative

Europe has a strong structural representation in the most influential new operator in current global change research, Future Earth. Four hubs of the secretariat are located in Europe: headquarters (“global hubs”) in Sweden and France; regional secretariats for Europe and for the MENA region in the UK and in Cyprus. Future Earth core projects include active European scientists and European Alliance of Global Change represent over 20 Future Earth / global change national committees in Europe.

In 2015, the European Alliance together with European Secretariats, hubs and several core projects started the discussions on closer collaboration and, for example, submitted a COST proposal to advance joint activities (results pending). As a result of this initial collaboration, European Alliances invites different European Future Earth operators and European research funders to continue discussions on how to advance Future Earth activities in Europe. This meeting is one of the firsts steps towards deeper collaboration and the network is open for all operators and stakeholders to join in the future.

The Annual Meeting 2015 of the European Alliance of Global Change Research Committees (for members only) will be held during the workshop.

Mission

European Regional Workshop for Future Earth Workshop aims to bring together different operators relevant to Future Earth research to discuss European priorities in Future Earth. The workshop invites Future Earth Science and Engagement Committee members, European secretariat and hubs, national committees and core project and funders from DG Research & Innovation, Belmont Forum and COST to explore synergies, gaps and resource efficiency in the European Future Earth activities. The workshop will discuss how to promote co-design on the European level and what are the steps towards setting the European Agenda for Future Earth.

Objectives

The workshop aims to achieve a better understanding of the different Future Earth operators and their main tasks. The workshop also aims to initiate discussion on the need to streamline the European research and funding global change landscape. Finally, the workshop will be the start of establishing a communication platform for the operators to share information and create ideas for joint proposals.
