3rd International Workshop on Stratospheric Sulphur and its Role in Climate

The 3rd International Workshop on Stratospheric Sulphur and its Role in Climate (SSiRC) will be held from 30 March to 1 April 2020 in Leeds, UK.

Venue

The workshop will be held at the University of Leeds in the Liberty Building (School of Law).

Description

The meeting's focus will be on observations and modelling of the stratospheric aerosol layer and its sources and, particularly, to understand volcanic impacts on stratospheric composition and climate.

Other related research topics are welcome, including:

- Recent volcanic activity (e.g. Raikoke) and the scientific response to them
- Recent field campaigns (e.g. StratoClim, AToM and ASPEN)
- Community modelling activities (e.g. ISA-MIP, VolMIP and GeoMIP)
- Related science programs (e.g. OCTAV-UTLS, CCMI, PAGES and VICS)
- Measurements and modelling of aerosol precursors such as SO2, OCS, and others.

Themes

Monday 30 March – Volcanic impacts on climate and stratospheric chemistry
Tuesday 31 March – Observations and modeling of the stratospheric aerosol layer and recent volcanic activity
Wednesday 1 April – Stratospheric aerosol precursors the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer and non-sulfate influences

Invited speakers

- Gabi Hegerl (Univ. Edinburgh, UK) will speak on "Volcanic influences on historical climate change, and the Early 20th Century Warming"
- Jean-Paul Vernier (NASA Langley, USA) will speak on "An overview of measurements of the Raikoke volcanic aerosol cloud, and the VolRes initiative"
- Michael Hoepfner (Kalsruhe Institute of Tech., Germany) will speak on "The composition of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol layer: Influence from ammonium nitrate"

The organizing committee includes Graham Mann (Univ. Leeds, UK), Stefanie Kremser (Bodeker Scientific, New Zealand), Landon Rieger (Univ. of Saskatchewan, Canada), and Larry Thomason (NASA Langley, USA).
