IBS Online Workshop: Introduction to Julia

Location

Online

Meeting Category

The International Biogeography Society is offering the online workshop "Introduction to Julia" on 1 March 2021 from 17:30-20:00 UTC.

Logistics

The workshop, led by Michael Borregaard and Timothée Poisot, runs for 2.5 hours.

There is a fee involved. Some waivers are available and registration is limited to allow for interactivity.

Description

Julia is an emerging language for scientific computation and data analysis, offering a syntax similar to R with orders of magnitude improvements in performance.

This workshop will serve as an introduction to Julia and its package ecosystem for ecological analysis, and the participants are expected to be ready to start experimenting with Julia by the end of the workshop.

Using two cases of typical ecological data analyses, we will give a general introduction to Julia, presenting the most popular working environments, and basic syntax concepts. We will focus on practical analysis, and how to produce high-quality plots, as well as giving an overview of the most important parts of the ecosystem, including tools for plotting, phylogenies, population dynamics, and geographic data.
