Culture, climate and environment interactions at prehistoric wetland sites

The University of Bern, Institute of Archaeological Science (IAW), the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (OCCR), and the IGBPs Past Global Changes (PAGES) program are hosting an international conference on culture and climate.

This interdisciplinary conference will gather researchers working in paleoecology, climate change research and prehistory.

Scope of the conference

The main themes will cover:- Holocene climate and environmental changes in the cultural context: impacts of climate and environmental change on humans.- Holocene ecology, economy and the use of resources at prehistoric wetland sites: anthropogenic impacts on wetland environments, ecosystems and regional climate.- Prehistoric (wetland) sites in the regional context: migration, mobility, trade and exchange.

Call for papers and publications

We encourage papers presenting case studies of broader interest, synthesis and review papers. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations should be submitted to the conference organizers before 1 February 2014. For details see the conference website.

The publication of high-profile conference proceedings (review papers and original research papers) in a special issue of an international journal is envisaged.

General information

The conference lasts from 11 - 13 June 2014 (Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon) and will be followed by an excursion on Saturday, 14 June 2014.

Registration

The registration fee of CHF 100 (students : CHF 50) includes conference registration, material, coffee breaks and welcome reception. Participation at the conference dinner (13 June 2014) is optional (supplementary CHF 70).
