Workshop title: Harmonisation of (sub)Arctic diatom taxonomy
Date: 6-8 June
Location: Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme (ECOENV), University of Helsinki, Finland
Workshop details
The workshop will be dedicated to integrating and agreeing upon a common taxonomy for all datasets. A key outcome of this workshop will be an outline of a taxonomic guide that includes descriptions of species morphology and ecology, images, and geographical distribution. This workshop will be hands-on: participants are encouraged to bring their own samples/slides and microscopes will be available.
This workshop is the 2nd in the series of 4 planned MARDI (Marine ARctic DIatoms) workshops, each of which builds on the previous workshop and plays a crucial part in achieving the overall MARDI goals.
This “on site” workshop will be followed by:
1) several online open-to-all taxonomic mini-workshops on taxonomically difficult key taxa that will be broadcast and archived online; and
2) gradual collection and archiving of diatom species information to online databases.
Preliminary program
Workshop runs Tuesday 6 June 09:00 through Thursday 8 June noon.
Discussion topics and activities:
- Status of pan-Arctic diatom database: presentation of different datasets and taxonomy issues
- Problematic taxa and main challenges in Arctic marine diatom taxonomy
