Description

The 3rd Open University Lecture is hosted by the Centre for Climate Change Research, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland).
Developed based on original, contemporary documentary and partly archaeological evidence, the current stage of the 800-year long flood reconstruction and possible long-term water level changes of the Middle Danube are discussed in the presentation, with identifying floodrich periods and some outstanding great floods since the beginning of the 13th century.
Applying (late) medieval, 16th - and 18th -century century case studies, in the second part of the presentation major consequences, socio-economic impacts and social response (resilience, mitigation, prevention) of Danube floods in the central and western part of the Carpathian Basin are analysed in more detail.
