The PAGES 2k Network PALEOLINK Project will hold a workshop, titled "A joint effort to bring together GCM, RCM and proxy communities" from 6-8 February 2019 in Murcia, Spain.

Venue

The workshop is hosted in the conference room of the Hotel NH Murcia Centro.

Logistics

This is an open workshop for approximately 30 attendees interested in the PALEOLINK topic.

Overview

This workshop aims to bring together experts in both the climate modeling and reconstruction communities. Organizers encourage presentations evaluating and developing new downscaling strategies that allow linking coarse ESM simulations with climate reconstructions. Both dynamical and statistical approaches to downscaling are considered, as well as novel combinations of both, including the use of forward models.

Objectives

The main aim of the workshop is to come up with a condensed list of specific questions/approaches that will be addressed during the second part of the PALEOLINK project. This specifically relates to establishing a meta database for the different regional simulations currently available.

The establishment of a standardized post-preprocessing protocol will also be supported, and production of metadata that facilitates and encourages data exchange with the proxy community. Techniques should be elaborated on the proper comparison between the proxies and the models, with focusing on different variables ranging from temperature over precipitation to isotopes. A new asset that will be explored by a specific working group is on statistical/dynamical downscaling to potentially achieve the regionalization of longer transient simulations covering the last 2,000 years.

Sessions

The workshop is structured along four thematic sessions, each one focussing on one of the pillars of PALEOLINK.

The detailed program will be settled once abstracts are received.

Session 1: Available & Planning for new RCM simulations

Although there are many RCM simulations available, they are unfortunately not widely known and exploited. RCM time slices for e.g. LGM, Mid-Holocene etc. are done individually with different forcing, domain, or time period. This hampers the quantification of model variability/uncertainty, which is also derived from proxy data. Therefore, this session aims at the dissemination of existing simulations, as well as at the coordination of future ones, to maximise their profit. We will discuss discuss whether we could benefit from creating e.g. a coordinated LGM ensemble over the CORDEX-Euro region.

Session 2: Climate Reconstructions

Climate reconstructions are a fundamental pillar of the PALEOLINK initiative. The added value of RCM is most noticeable at local scales, precisely those recorded in the proxy record. Therefore, we aim at gathering expertise from the climate reconstructions community. New datasets from natural sources such as tree rings or lake sediments, but also documentary sources and early instrumental data, are welcome to this session.

Session 3: New Techniques for model-data comparison

Internal variability in climate models hampers in many situations a simple a nd naive comparison of the temporal evolution of the series in both datasets. Therefore we need to develop new techniques that account for this uncertainty, perhaps through distribution-wise comparisons of model and proxy data. This session is devoted to the development of new approaches to 'bridge the model-data gap'.

Session 4: Forward Modeling Approaches

Forward modelling can be seen as an alternative approach to model-data comparison. The highly resolved data provided by RCMs is especially suitable for its application in this type of modelling. This session explores the added value of the application of forward models driven by RCM data. Outreach event

Meeting dinner

There will be a workshop dinner on Thursday 7 February in a historical place near the city center (TBD).

Registration and abstract submission

Please pre-registration and submit abstracts by 2 December 2018: https://www.um.es/gmar/staff/gomez/workshop/registration/index.html

If too many applications are received, the scientific committee will decide which abstracts are accepted based on relevant expertise and interest in the subject of the workshop. You will be informed about the outcome of this selection on 7 December 2018.

The selected candidates will then be invited to register by email.

Costs and financial support

All applicants whose contribution is accepted can attend the workshop free of charge, but participants are expected to cover their own expenses, i.e. traveling and accommodation.

A limited amount of funding will be provided to cover part of these costs for early-career scientists and researchers from developing countries. The amount of this help depends on the number of applications, but it has a maximum of 300€ per person, which will be reimbursed after the workshop.

Post-meeting material

Access the program and general workshop guidelines here (pdf).

An important part of the workshop was the organization of four breakout groups where several topics were further discussed in detail. We organised afterwards "roadmaps" for discussion and future steps/aims. Leaders encourage you to have a look to decide if you want to join any of these initiatives.

> Road map for the added value group

> Roadmap for the downscaling group

> Roadmap for the glacial group

> Roadmap for the ocean modeling group
