PAGES ECN splinter meeting

31 July, 9:00-10:45: Meeting Room 3 (Level 2). We will discuss the future PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop on long-term coupled human-environmental systems. More information here. Organizers especially invite early-career researchers (ECRs) to attend, but everyone is welcome.

ECRs bring new ideas, interdisciplinary networks, and data synthesis skills to tackle complex questions in the climate-environment-cultural change nexus, which is at the core of both PAGES’ and INQUA’s missions.

Future ECR conferences will benefit from interdisciplinary discussions that catalyze research questions of past socio-ecological systems, with lessons for the present and future societal impacts on Earth’s ecosystems.

The splinter meeting will be focused on discussing ideas and suggestions for organizing the PAGES-INQUA ECR workshop to be held in 2020, centered around the theme "Past human-environmental systems".

Everyone is welcome at this splinter meeting, especially members of PAGES and INQUA working groups and also all ECRs who are interested in the PAGES Early-Career Network.

The planned 2020 workshop aims to include participation and close collaboration from members within the PAGES LandCover6k, Global Paleofire, PEOPLE 3000 and other (e.g. PAGES 2k Network, EcoRe3, PALSEA) working groups and INQUA Commission on human and biosphere (HABCOM).

Organizers are aiming for an interdisciplinary workshop that catalyzes discussions to build informed perspectives of the interactions between human and environmental systems over long-term temporal scales (past socio-environmental systems; SES). Discussions will also include potential locations for the workshop.

The ultimate goal is to strengthen scientific collaborations among the future generation of paleoscientists working at the interface climate, archaeology and history.

PAGES and INQUA held their first joint ECR meeting in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in August 2018. The topic of that meeting was "Impacts of sea-level rise from past to present". Find out more here.
