The final meeting of PAGES' Ocean Circulation and Carbon Cycling (OC3) working group will be held after the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, USA, on 14 December 2019 from 9:00 to 16:00.

The title of the meeting is "New knowledge and more questions about the ocean during the last deglaciation."

Venue

Harry M. Smith Conference Room at Union Square
8th Floor, Suite 800
414 Mason Street
San Francisco, CA 94102

Description

The PAGES OC3 group was established in 2014 to compile benthic stable carbon isotope data in order to gain a better understanding of the deep ocean circulation and its connection to the CO2 degassing during the last deglaciation. Five years of research, new collaborations, and three meetings led us down an interesting path, including the discussion of age-model approaches, data quality checks, as well as proxy-modeling studies, culminating in a consistently dated δ13C compilation.

Now it is time to wrap up. We would like to look back on what worked and what didn’t work, what was accomplished on our way, to report recent results, discuss future analyses of the datasets and plan/write manuscripts. But we also want to look forward and discuss opportunities for follow-up projects and plans for the future. Hereby, we ask for your contributions to this one-day workshop. Related topics may include age-model development, data compilation/analysis, and ocean modeling on ocean-basin to global scales.

Program

9:00-9:30: Welcome and breakfast

9:30-12:00: Session 1 – OC3 summary and future perspectives
9:30: OC3 database (J. Muglia)
9:50: Update of the Pacific dataset (L. Lembke)
10:10: Age models (L. Lisiecki)
10:30: New insights into the deglacial evolution of the North Atlantic deepwater convection (J. Repschläger)
10:50: Solving the Planktic Foraminifera Carbon Isotope Dilemma for Paleoceanographic Interpretations (H. Spero)
11:10-11:45: Discussion on future compilation work
- Multiproxy compilation
- Planktic foraminifera
- Different time focus (e.g. older interglacials)
11:45: Wrap up of discussion and decision on focus of future work

12:00-13:00: Lunch

13:00-15:00: Session 2 – Discussion on database and manuscripts and future proposal writing
Potential discussion points:
- Data-model comparison: do we have new concepts that can be tested with models and vice versa
- Pacific compilation: How to proceed?
- Global compilation: Where are the gaps?
- Global analyses
- Proposal writing for future OC3 attempts
Concepts for additional publications

15:00-15:30: Coffee break
15:30-16:00: Wrap-up and farewell
