A new Seminar Series on sea-level changes, GIA and ice sheets will run from 9 March to 13 July 2021.

Logistics

All events will have a start time somewhere between 16:00-18:00 UTC.

Description

As a group under the combined auspices of the WCRP, PAGES' PALSEA working group, SERCE and the IAG sub-commission 3.4, group leaders are starting a once-a-month virtual seminar series dealing with sea-level changes, GIA, and ice sheets.

This monthly seminar series is intended to engage a broad community in advance of future workshops organized by PALSEA-SERCE and the WCRP, and to stimulate discussion and ideas for collaboration and synthesis in this multidisciplinary community.

Program

Seminars are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month and nominally will fall within the time window of 16:00-18:00 UTC, depending on the schedule and time zones of the speakers.

9 March at 16:30 UTC
For the inaugural meeting on 9 March at 16:30 UTC, Bob Kopp of Rutgers University will talk about the IPCC AR6 process, including the topic "What is needed from the paleo and GIA community to help refine projections of future sea-level change?" The talk will be followed by a discussion period, and this first session will also introduce the broader goals of the series.

13 April at 15:00 UTC
"Future directions in GIA model intercomparison and benchmarking"
Speaker: Wouter van der Wal (Delft University)
The seminar will be followed by discussions.

11 May at 15:00 UTC
"Perspectives from the modern sea level and ice sheet modeling communities"
Aimée Slangen, a researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and a lead author of the IPCC AR6 report, will discuss advances in modern sea level research and coastal risk and Fiamma Straneo from SCRIPPS Institution of Oceanography (UCSD) will discuss the ISMIP6 effort and offer her perspective on how to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration.

8 June
"Paleo ice sheet records and modeling"
Speaker 1: April Dalton, "The marine δ18O record overestimates continental ice volume during Marine Isotope Stage 3"
Speaker 2: Andrew Christ, "Paleo ice sheets"

13 July
"Holocene paleo sea level records"
Speaker 1: Nicole Khan
Speaker 2: Stephen Chua
