The PAGES 2k Network conducted an online seminar series 20 May - 8 Nov 2021.
Today's seminar - 20 May at 13:00 UTC
Liz Thomas and Diana Vladimirova, from the British Antarctic Survey, UK, will present an update on the CLIVASH2k project.
Description
The CLIVASH2k project aims to improve our understanding of the drivers of climate change in Antarctica during the past 2000 years.
It builds on the previous PAGES 2k synthesis products reconstructing past Antarctic snowfall and surface temperatures. In this talk we highlight the breadth of research generated from these reconstructions and the importance of expanding our database to capture the divers of Antarctic climate variability.
Notably, the role of sea ice and atmospheric circulation. We present a compilation of published Antarctic sea ice records spanning the past 2000 years. We review the available proxies and explore the potential to combine the marine and ice core data to improve our spatial and temporal coverage.
Despite identifying 92 published sea ice reconstructions, a circum-Antarctic sea ice reconstruction is still only possible during the 20th century. These findings provided the motivation for the latest CLIVASH2k data call, to compile all sodium and sulphate records from Antarctic ice cores.
We will present the initial results from this community effort and explore the data’s potential to reconstruct atmospheric circulation and sea ice.
