This presentation is called "New insight from old wood".
This lecture will explore some of the recent advances in the precision dating of timbers and wooden artefacts using stable isotopes in tree-rings.
The talk will describe the principles underpinning stable isotope dendrochronology, how they may be applied to establish chronology and to tell us about the climate of the past.
Case studies will focus specifically on samples not normally considered suitable for ring-width dating with a view to widening the range of dating tools available to archaeologists and heritage managers.
Prof. Neil Loader is based at Prifysgol Abertawe / Swansea University, UK. His work focuses on the development and application of techniques for the stable isotope analysis of natural archives (tree-rings, peat, pollen etc.) for scientific dating and the study of past and contemporary environmental change.
