Description

The SCAR Open Science Conference 2022 will be held online from 1-10 August 2022.

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, takes pride and pleasure in hosting the SCAR Open Science Conference 2022. The theme of the conference is "Antarctica in a Changing World."

Science program

Plenary events

- Opening Ceremony

- The Weyprecht Lecture

- The David Walton Antarctic Science Lecture

- Scar medal awardee lectures

- Closing ceremony

Mini-symposia

The Mini-symposium concept was incorporated into the program of the SCAR Open Science Conference to encourage cross- and trans-disciplinary interactions and to expose a wide audience to science they might not otherwise encounter. Mini-Symposia are dedicated, interactive interdisciplinary events that highlight the timeliest and most cutting edge topics proposed by the community. To this end, no competing presentations, meetings, or events are scheduled during the Mini-symposia.

Mini-symposia format is flexible but usually includes the convenors and 3 to 5 topical experts. The topic presented is introduced by the convenors followed by brief remarks by the experts. Audience participation is encouraged through a following question and answer session.

The Mini-symposia for the 10th SCAR Open Science Conference are:

- Highlights of Scar’s Scientific Research Programmes

- Teleconnections Between the Poles and the Tropics

- Cryospheric Change in the Antarctic and Arctic

Panel Discussions

Panel discussions are interactive audience participation events. A convenor and panel of experts introduce the topic to be discussed followed by active participation by attendees. To encourage participation, the convenors and panelist will pose a series of questions to direct to the conversation.

The Panel Discussion for the 10th SCAR Open Science Conference is: Antarctic Science and Political Priorities: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities

Parallel sessions

The core of the SCAR Open Science Conference is a series of a parallel sessions populated by brief presentations proposed by the community via abstract submissions. Parallel sessions include both oral and poster presentations. An initial list of parallel sessions is generated by the International Science Organizing Committee in consultation with the community. The final program of sessions is assembled based on abstract submissions. During this process, depending on community response, proposed sessions may be omitted or combined. Sessions are led by convenors and concluded with an opportunity for the audience to ask presenters questions.  In organizing the parallel sessions, conflicts in timing amongst similar or related topics are minimized to allow for participation by attendees.

Workshops

Workshops are proposed by the community. A workshop is a meeting at which a self-elected group of people engage in intensive discussion and activity on a particular subject or project. The exact format for a workshop is decided by the proposers. Workshops are scheduled in the peripheries of the Open Science Conference to avoid interfere with attendance at plenary events, mini-symposia, panel discussions and parallel sessions.

Satellite events

Traditionally, the SCAR community has taken advantage of the opportunity presented by the large number of people assembled at the Open Science Conference, to schedule meetings in the periphery of the conference. The online format of this year’s conference diminishes this opportunity, but SCAR will continue the practice of coordinating requests from the community for satellite meetings to avoid conflicts in scheduling. The management, organizing, advertisement, format, attendance, and outcomes of any such events are the responsibility of the convenors. When considering scheduling, proponents should note that no satellite meetings will be allowed during the formal sessions of the Open Science Conference or the Business Meetings. The SCAR Open Conference website will include a complete listing of satellite events and organizer contact information for those that might be interested.

If you have an event, you would  like listed, please send a title (limited to 30 characters) and a short abstract (limited to 250 words) to infoatscar.org (nfo[at]scar[dot]org) for consideration for inclusion in the Conference website (subject line: Proposed SCAR OSC Satellite Event).
