Description: Minerogenic matter transported into a lake during spring snowmelt-floods form the base of a varve, i.e. the beginning of a new depositional cycle. Organic matter, mainly from lacustrine production, is accumulated during the following summer, autumn and winter, completing the annual rhythm of sedimentation. Micrograph with normal (left) and polarized light (right).
