Location

Tehran, Iran

Meeting Category

The 3rd Plenary Conference and Field Trip of INQUA IFG 1709F "Ponto-Caspian Stratigraphy and Geochronology" (POCAS) will be held from 11-18 October 2019 in Tehran, Iran.

The conference is run under the auspices of the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science (INIOAS).

Venue

INIOAS Headquarters
Tehran, I.R. Iran.

Description

The series of meetings and field trips that were started as the UNESCO - IUGS - IGCP 610 project continue as the INQUA-POCAS project that focuses on the Quarternary stratigraphy and geochronology of the Ponto-Caspian Region.

This meeting will focus on the geological history extending from Upper Miocene through Plio/Pleistocene until historical periods, in the south Caspian coast, north Iran provinces (Ardebil, Guilan, Mazanderan and Golestan).

This subject is very important in shedding light and achieving a better understanding of tectonic-climatic interactions during the Plio/Quaternary period in this region.

It is expected that the meeting will bring together multidisciplinary scientists from all over the world to enhance the West-East scientific dialogue and provide a foundation for collaboration on correlation and integration of subjects covered by the conference as previous IGCP 610, IGCP 521, INQUA 0501, INQUA IFG POCAS meetings have done.

Program

The conference will include plenary sessions and subsequent field trips. The two day sessions of the Conference will be devoted to oral presentations and posters.

The next four days of the conference will be devoted to geological field trips that focus on the geoarchaeological history of the ancient Persian sites in Guilan Province. The most ancient human settlement in the south Caspian area (Darband e Rashi Cave, 220,000-230,000 years BP), Cheragh-Ali Tappeh (Marlik Site belongs to Iron Age), the Cedar of Harzevill (a very old cedar with an age of more than a millennia), Sassanid Sites of Navehzireh, Qaleh Rud Khan historical wall of Ilkhanis and Qoroq historical shipwreck will be visited. During the fieldtrip, we will cross the hyrcanian forest from Daylam Mountains to the Guilan coastal plain. This cross section includes evidence of Pleistocene volcanic activities, loss deposits of Rudbar, the Sefidrud Valley and its deposits, the vast delta of Sefidrud and the evidence of the river avulsion and finally beach deposits and palaeoshorelines.
