This study was undertaken as part of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) project (and its working group LandCover6k). The classification presented here is the result of extensive discussion, argument, and compromise. Archaeological and historical synthesis of this type, and on this scale, is unprecedented, and we acknowledge the range and depth of intellectual contributions to this work.
