Abstract
Speleothem trace element to Ca ratios are increasingly acknowledged for providing valuable information on the paleo-environment of cave systems. However, the interpretation of trace elements in speleothem calcite and aragonite are depending on several processes such as transport and incorporation mechanisms, and drip water composition and chemistry, which all affect partitioning behavior.
Furthermore, mineralogy exerts a strong control on trace element partitioning with important consequences for the interpretation of trace element records. Finally, drip water trace element composition and chemistry themselves control the dominant speleothem mineralogy. In this seminar I aim to give an overview of the known processes that control trace element partitioning in speleothem calcite and aragonite and show their dependency on speleothem mineralogy.
