7th Conference on Regional Climate and Environmental Dynamics: Geoscience In The Carpathian And Black Sea Region (GCBS 2023)
Logistics
Date: 14-17 September 2023
Location: Vatra Dornei, Suceava County, Romania
Format: Hybrid
Description
This scientific event is an initiative of the University of Suceava (Applied Sciences Doctoral School) in collaboration with the Geoconcept Association of Applied Geography, supported by the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) and Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitization (MCID) and endorsed by Carpathian Climate and Environment Working Group-CarpClim (PAGES), Science for Carpathians (S4C) and the Carpathian Convention (CC).
The conference will bring together leading researchers and experts in geoscience and paleoscience from the Carpathian – Black Sea Region, as well as scientists from the international community in a hybrid format.
We welcome both oral presentations (onsite or online) and posters.
The event will feature keynote lectures from well-respected scientists providing state-of-the-art overviews on topics of interest for this conference.
About
In this 7th edition we propose an interdisciplinary scientific event focusing on past and current climate and environmental changes in the Carpathian and Black Sea Region since the Last Glacial Maximum. The conference aims to provide more insight into the most recent advances in geoscience and paleoscience and to support regional collaboration in research, which is still understated despite the fact that significant steps have been taken in recent years.
GCBS 2023 can be regarded as a follow-up event on the previous conferences and workshops organized by our team from 2011 to 2022 which have provided a good framework for sharing research and collaboration for further investigation of the Carpathian – Lower Danube – Balkan region.
Timescales covered
Late Pleistocene, Holocene and Anthropocene. The goal of the conference is to bring forward multi-proxy, as well as instrumental and spatial data for climate and environmental reconstruction focusing on the Last Termination (ca 22-11.5 ka), the Holocene and the Anthropocene in the Carpathian – Black Sea Region.
Topics of interest
These include, but are not limited to, the following scientific subjects:
- Characteristics and extents of former glaciation in the Carpathians
- Lake and marine sediments as paleoenvironmental archives
- Past climate changes and vegetation history
- Sea level changes and deltaic system dynamics
- Karst and cave records as recorders of climate change
- Dendrochronology and dendroclimatology
- Geoarchaeology, geohistory and landscape archaeology
- Climate variations and fluvial dynamics
- Loess-Paleosoil complexes
- Novel climate change modeling techniques
- Human impact and pollution history
- Land-use/land-cover changes and climate – modeling and analysis
- Impact of past, current and future climate shifts on population and economic activities

- Weiguo Zhang
- Eniko Magyari
- Heitor Evangelista
- Emmanuel Chapron
- Nikolaos Zacharias

Important dates
Early-bird registration – 1 July 2023
Late registration – 1 September 2023
Registration and abstract submission
Please send an email including the title, authors and abstract of your presentation to: mindrescuatlas.usv.ro (mindrescu[at]atlas[dot]usv[dot]ro)
Early-career researcher (ECR) grants
We offer partial or full financial support for early-career researchers (under 35) who apply to participate in GCBS 2023. The number of grants will range depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their submitted work.
Applicants for grants (covering registration fee and/or transportation costs) are required to specify their age and to submit the title and abstract of their presentation no later than 1 July 2023.
Publication
As regards the publication of relevant contributions presented at GCBS 2023, we have established an agreement with the Quaternary journal (WoS) to publish a volume dedicated to this region.
Based on our experience from previous conferences and workshops, we expect that, provided a sufficient number of high-quality contributions are submitted for the conference, we will be able to publish a special volume with Quaternary International. We have had a successful collaboration with QI in the past which enabled us to publish three volumes comprising contributions to our scientific events.
