FAQ: PAGES working group mailing lists

In 2023, the University of Bern made a move to restrict access to a number of University IT products in order to increase IT security measures and GDPR compliance.

This had an impact on the PAGES working group mailing lists. Specifically, it restricted access for anyone without a University of Bern email address to join a mailing list in the easy, traditional format of just signing up. Further, it had repercussions for working group mailing list administrators and moderators, and posed a number of challenges in managing the lists.

In the interim, some progress has been made by the University's IT department in relaxing the very tight restrictions.

If you cannot find the answer to your question below, please contact the PAGES IPO via email: pages@pages.unibe.ch

For your convenience, and to easily access a mailing list, the current PAGES working groups are shown below the questions.

All you need to do is click on the mailing list link you want to join, fill in your details and you will receive an email to verify your email address (to prevent email addresses from being subscribed without the owners’ consent), then you will receive an automatic email confirming your subscription, once this has been approved by a moderator.

Outside of the University of Bern network, you will either have to use the VPN connection provided by the university, or the Eduroam network (see question #2 below).

*Please note that if you connect to a mailing list using Eduroam, you must temporarily unplug your cable network.

Recently, the University enabled access to join mailing lists for anyone on the Eduroam network. Eduroam is a wireless network that many universities, research institutes, schools, etc. have made available to their staff, students and guests.

If you have access to Eduroam, just log in to the network, and access the mailing lists once you are connected. Fill in your details and you will receive an email to verify your email address (to prevent email addresses from being subscribed without the owners’ consent), then you will receive an automatic email confirming your subscription, once this has been approved by a moderator.

*Please note that if you connect to a mailing list using Eduroam, you must temporarily unplug your cable network.

You have two options.

Either you can send an email to the working group mailing list administrator directly, or to pages@pages.unibe.ch and request to join. The mailing list moderators will then manually add your email to the list.

Or, you can create an account on the Switch_edu-ID platform. Once your account has been created there, click on the mailing list you want to join and you will be able to access the mailing list sign up page. Fill in your details and you will receive an email to verify your email address, then you will receive an automatic email confirming your subscription, once this has been approved by a moderator.

All you need to do is click on the mailing list link you want to manage and you will be able to access and sign into the control panel and manage the list. Outside University of Bern network, you will either have to use the VPN connection provided by the university, or the Eduroam network (see question #5 below).

You will be able to log into the control panel and access everything, moderate posts, approve new subscriptions, etc. as long as you are doing this while signed in on the Eduroam network.

You can create an account on the Switch_edu-ID platform. Once your account has been created there, you will be able to access and sign into the control panel, and manage the list.
