Dr. Aster Gebrekirstos - Featured scientist in “Earth, Oceans and Skies”

PAGES would like to congratulate Dr. Aster Gebrekirstos, PAGES Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) member, on being selected as a featured scientist in the new book “Earth, Oceans and Skies” by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

The ECA was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958. It forms one of the UN's five regional commissions and aims to "promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development." The book aims “to accord agency to the scientists and to hero their science. Thus, Earth, Oceans and Skies is autobiographical, where the scientists tell their own lives as they see themselves and their existence in the world of science. We recognize and embrace the subjectivity of autobiography; indeed it is in the biases of this approach that the strength of this book lies."

Aster is a senior scientist at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). She has pioneered the field of dendrochronology in Africa where, she believes "this science has great potential in addressing challenges of lack of data, land degradation and climate change."

Born in Tigray, Ethiopia, The article is an account of Aster's childhood, and her journey into the world of science, specifically dendrochronolgy.
