L&O Letters Early Career Publication Honor

L&O Letters Early Career Publication Honor

The PAGES Early Career Network would like to highlight an opportunity for ECRs to publish in L&O Letters free of charge.

The aim is to support ECRs with little funding, and there are 12 grants available.

"Call for Applications: L&O Letters Early Career Publication Honor
Deadline July 15, 2022

We invite applications for the 2022 Limnology & Oceanography Letters Early Career Publication Honor that pays the publication cost of open-access articles authored by Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in need. The Honor was conceived and is managed by ASLO’s Raelyn Cole Editorial (RCE) Fellows to support publication of innovative research in the aquatic sciences by ECRs who have no funding or prospects for securing funding to pay the cost of open-access publication.

Honor details:

Twelve waivers are available for papers published by 2023. Honorees will receive:

  1. Waiver of the $3000 Author Publication Cost (APC) of an article accepted for publication in Limnology & Oceanography Letters.
  2. Support from an RCE Fellow with a pre-submission manuscript review and guidance in navigating the submission process.
  3. Publicity of accepted papers via ASLO and L&O Letters social media.
  4. Note: The honor does not guarantee publication in L&O Letters. All honored manuscripts will be subject to full peer review and editorial consideration.

Eligibility:

This Honor targets students or postgraduates who completed their highest degree after July 2016 (exemptions can be granted for career interruptions). Proposed manuscripts must fit the scope of L&O Letters and have the high scientific merit of papers published in ASLO journals.

Eligible applicants will:

  1. be lead author of the proposed manuscript. Joint first authorship will be considered if shared between two ECRs. Applicant details for the second first author must be included in the application form. The final application score will average the scores of each applicant.
  2. be the corresponding or co-corresponding author for the manuscript. No restrictions are placed on the career stage for the second corresponding author (please email the selection committee at rcef.aslo@gmail.com if there are barriers to meeting this requirement).
  3. demonstrate financial need by completing a required financial need statement, here.
  4. meet the journal’s data-publication requirement in their submission, as outlined here.
  5. demonstrate progress toward manuscript preparation and a feasible plan for meeting the manuscript submission deadline of June 1, 2023.

Additional criteria:

The primary criteria for selecting honorees are demonstrated need and scientific quality of the research. Additional weight will be given to submissions from:

  1. applicants currently studying or working in a country in the Global South, where scientific research is under-funded. A list of those countries is available at: UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects 2021 (Statistical annex, Table C - Developing Economies by region, page 126). Applicants from Ukraine will also be given priority.
  2. members of underrepresented groups, defined broadly to include race, gender, disability, first-generation, or other identity component that is not typically represented in STEM.

How to apply:

The selection committee will receive applications via a Google Form.

If access to Google is not available, you may submit your application to rcef.aslo@gmail.com as a single PDF file that includes applicant details, responses to manuscript-related questions, and the required financial need statement (access the application form here and the statement template here).

Follow @rcef_aslo on Twitter for updates about the Honor. Please send any questions about the application process or the Honor to rcef.aslo@gmail.com. Replies of general interest will be posted to the RCEF Twitter account.
