The 9th PAGES webinar on "Ethics in publishing and combatting predatory practices in science", with Dr. Ramón Feenstra (Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, Spain) and Dr. Asfawossen Asrat Kassaye (Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Botswana) as speakers took place on 7 September 2023.

Ramón discussed the topic of ethics and open-access publishing, emphasizing the complexity of the subject and the importance of caution and rigor in the publishing process. He highlighted the characteristics of predatory journals and suggested using resources like predatory reports and 'think, check, submit' to verify the legitimacy of journals. Ramón also discussed the two different ways of moral reasoning for publishing and the importance of reputation and credibility in academic research. Asfawossen shared a study conducted by the inter academic partnership examining predatory practices in academic journals and conferences, highlighting the vulnerability of researchers in arts and humanities and the need for a spectrum approach to assess publication quality. He emphasized the importance of researchers being aware of predatory journals and conferences to safeguard their work and reputation.
