Dr. Carrie Morrill appointed new WDS-Paleo Director

PAGES would like to extend congratulations to Dr. Carrie Morrill who has been announced as the new Director of the World Data Service for Paleoclimatology (WDS-Paleo).

Before entering NOAA federal employment, Dr. Morrill was a Research Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado. In that role, she led projects to support the WDS-Paleo and NOAA, including developing scientific products and standardizing terminology to describe contributed datasets. She looks forward to continuing to work with the community to build a long-term, sustainable data archive that meets the needs of scientists and other users.

WDS-Paleo archives and distributes data contributed by scientists around the world. It provides the paleoclimatology data and information that scientists need to understand natural climate variability and potential future climate change. It is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Within NOAA, it is part of the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) - National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), and fosters NOAA's goals to understand climate variability, extremes, and change and to build societal resilience in relation to these aspects of climate. For more information on WDS-Paleo, please visit their website here.

As a scientific partner of PAGES, with a relationship dating back to our beginnings in 1993, we share the same commitment to data stewardship. This is also evident in the the PAGES Data Stewardship Integrative Activity, and the many databases that have been developed, are in development and are widely used today. PAGES and WDS-Paleo recognize convergence in their interests and activities, and the existence of substantial mutual collaboration.

We look forward to continuing this partnership with Dr. Morrill at the helm of WDS-Paleo and wish her all the best in her new role.
